FlorentinaSong, Inc. - honors my daughter who continues to experience an extraordinary joyful connection with artistic expression, music, dancing and singing as her way of tearing through the mask autism viciously placed on her life. She’s winning the battle!
Our Story
Road to Autism Recovery
August 2000 I flew to Romania to pick up our daughter and son. The adoption agency told us Florentina was simply a "little delayed and would make a full recovery in no time."
Florentina was 3 ½, the size of an 18 month old, still in diapers, could not speak other than grunting noises and squeals, and was still on formula having never eaten solid foods. She stared at the sky until I started singing to her. There was an instant spark and twinkle in her eyes as if she were waking up for the first time.
Through-out the week Florentina became more and more engaged with me, interacting, responding with eye contact, smiles and laughter. She even loved the airplane rides, the whole world was opening up for her!
When we arrived home in Seattle, we were referred to a Physician by the adoption agency as they *had* experience with the special needs of foreign adopted children. Never once were we advised for further testing again being assured Florentina was simply "delayed due to institutionalization" handing me a 6-pack of Pediasure.
The Physician was insistent Florentina be re-vaccinated claiming the mandated vaccines she received in Romania before leaving the country may have been "compromised from poor refrigeration methods". Within weeks of these Vaccines (her 4th series of the same) Florentina rapidly declined. She became despondent, spacey, screaming, agitated, more tactile defensive with increasingly painful Gut Issues.
A year after arriving home, Florentina received an official diagnosis of
Autism.
November 2005; 5 years, 3 months after Florentina arrived in the States we FINALLY found a doctor who understands and confirms Autism behaviors are manifested by underlining medical/physiological disorders.
Dr. Alejandro Contreras of The Evergreen Center in Oregon City, Oregon is one of the many extraordinary physicians whom have dedicated their practice in whole or part to treating children with Autism Bio-Medically following the Defeat Autism Now or DAN! Protocol in connection with the Autism Research Institute.http://autism.com
Dr. Contreras was our 9th or 10th doctor to date - all other physicians we saw would not recognize Autism psychological behaviors are brought on by physiological disorders. The majority suggested we simply medicate her with some type of psycho-tropic drug, ignoring or otherwise misdiagnosing her Gut Issues and related health problems. As a parent, I knew Florentina was fighting to come out from behind the mask Autism viciously placed on her. I also knew she was physically sick and medically something could be done to heal her.
We continue to fully support the Autism Research Institute and DAN! Protocol http://autism.com/dan/index.htm and encourage parents, caregivers, school personnel, practitioners...everyone to seek out the facts on treatments and recovery through their online resources, scientific papers, educational videos as well as conferences.
Florentina continues to make great strides in her recovery; her creativity blossoms daily! Art and music continue to be the groundstones of communication; languages of instant connection for Florentina closing the gaps to the world around her.
With sincere passion of sharing; we wish to make way to opportunities for people on the Autism Spectrum to be inspired; to be part of community; to open up through artistic and musical expression.
